Why I moved abroad

Moving abroad is a big decision, and it is not to be taken lightly. Even though it is a very personal decision, it also has to be made with the right intentions. It will not, for instance, fix a broken marriage, but it can definitely enrich your life and broaden your horizons.

Reasons I moved to the Netherlands (and left South Africa)

There are many factors and reasons that contributed towards us leaving South Africa for a new home, but we can safely say we did it for the right reasons. Here I'll outline my three main reasons

The experience / adventure

My wife and I moved to experience new cultures, learn about our history, reconnect to our heritage, drink great craft beers and explore Europe with all it has to offer, with the Netherlands being our central base of operations. The Netherlands is uniquely situated with so many countries just over an hour’s drive from Utrecht.

Safety and security

Crime rates in the Netherlands have declined annually, with many prisons that have closed over the last few years. If you are concerned about your safety and security, then the Netherlands is a great consideration. There are still petty crimes with pick pockets rife in Amsterdam, but generally people lose stuff here all the time, and mostly you fill find it where you lost it or somebody took it to lost and found. There is no need to lock yourself in your home (a.k.a. prison as some South Africans refer to it) every night.

A future for my children

Dutch children are of some of the happiest children in the world. Furthermore, primary and secondary education (excluding international schools) is mostly free. The amount of support that parents receive for newborn children from the Dutch government is also very good, with regular checkups and the assistance of a dedicated kraamhulp for the first few days of a newborn’s life.
